The official gauge of China’s manufacturing activity unexpectedly fell into contraction in April, ending a three-month expansion, reflecting a retreat of demand in the month, government data showed Sunday.
China’s official manufacturing purchasing managers index fell to 49.2 in April, down from 51.9 in March, said the National Bureau of Statistics. The result was also below the 51.4 expected by economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal.
