WASHINGTON—Janet Yellen told President Biden late last year that she planned to stay on as Treasury secretary and Mr. Biden welcomed the decision, White House officials said, putting to rest for now speculation about whether she would remain at the department.
The December conversation stemmed in part from rumors in Washington about Ms. Yellen’s departure, the officials said. Ms. Yellen assured Mr. Biden that she intended to stay, something that she and her aides have said publicly for months. The president responded that he was glad she would continue in the role, said the officials, who stressed that it was an informal discussion.
