New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell played another blistering knock for the defending World Test Champions, having smashed 81 runs on Day 1 of the second Test against England in Nottingham.

Mitchell’s unbeaten half-century was laced with nine boundaries and two sixes. Among the two sixes hit by him, one landed in the spectator’s beer pint. The incident took place in the 56th over of the innings bowled by left-arm spinner Jack Leach.

Nearby England seamer Matthew Potts signalled from the boundary to his teammates about the incident.

“Come on Jack, keep him quiet. This is costing people a fortune in beer in the stands,” said former England spin bowler Phil Tufnell on the BBC commentary.

The ball got wet and the umpires had to dry up the ball but the lady’s beer had been spilt. Later in the day, New Zealand Cricket replaced her broken pint of beer with a new one.

Later, the woman, Susan, was offered a replacement drink by the New Zealand side, as confirmed by the Barmy Army on social media.

After the end of the day’s play, Mitchell himself went to meet Susan to apologise for hitting straight into her beer glass. The New Zealand batter also asked her if she got a replacement and she was quick to confirm that.

Mitchell also asked the fan to catch the ball with her hands next time, to which Susan replied that it went straight into her drink and she didn’t have enough time to think.
