Sean Abbott’s tour of Sri Lanka was cut short due to a finger break in the nets, while Cameron Green and Alex Carey will begin theirs early after being called up to Australia A squad.

Abbott, Australia’s fast bowler who played both white-ball forms in their most recent series in Pakistan, is returning home after a net bowler struck him in the hand and fractured his left index finger at training this week.

The 30-year-old was only included in Australia’s T20I squad for the tour, which began Tuesday evening, but was anticipated to stay with the A-side, which is playing two 50-over games and two four-day matches in Colombo and Hambantota.

In the T20 squad, Australia has not named a substitute for Abbott. Jhye Richardson is the reserve fast bowler, and selectors can call up players from the A squad if necessary.

Queensland wicketkeeper Jimmy Peirson has been called up to the A team in place of Peter Handscomb, who will return home early to be with his expectant wife Sarah in Melbourne.

The Australians have also stated that Ashes star Scott Boland will go to Sri Lanka earlier than expected in order to play in the A team’s inaugural four-day encounter next week.

Green and Carey were not part of the original A squad, but both are in Sri Lanka ahead of the main team’s ODI series, which begins next week in Kandy, and will play the first two one-dayers against Sri Lanka A at the SSC Ground in Colombo.
