Clashes erupt between Congress workers, police amid Raj Bhavan march against ED

Thiruvananthapuram: A Congress march to Raj Bhavan against Enforcement Directorate turned violent here on Thursday. Police used water cannons and tear gas on the protesters. The party staged a demonstration in front of the Raj Bhavan by marking dissent against the repeated quizzing of Rahul Gandhi by the ED in Delhi.

The clashes erupted following the departure of KPCC president K Sudhakaran and opposition leader VD Satheesan after inaugurating the march. Police had erected barricades in front of the Raj Bhavan to stop the protesters. However, an open clash broke out when the Congress activists attempted to knock down the barricades.

Though the police attempted to pacify the protesters, the latter did not heed it. Meanwhile, a Congress worker pulled down one of the barricades. The protesters also reportedly pelted stones at the police. This urged the police to use the water cannons twice and a tear gas later.

Though the protest was organised to extend support for Rahul Gandhi, the Congress workers were raising slogans against the state government and police while attempting to knock down the barricades.
